General rules
- On passenger cars and vans, all tyres on the vehicle must be the same type (i.e. winter or summer tyres).
- On lorries and coaches, all tyres on same axle must be the same type (i.e. winter or summer tyres).
- All-season tyres marked with the alpine symbol are considered winter tyres.
- Minimum tread depth requirement for passenger cars, vans, lorries and coaches is 1.6 mm all year round.
Winter tyre requirements
- According to the road traffic law, a vehicle must not be fitted with so-called ‘obviously unsuitable tyres’. In wintry conditions (slush, snow, ice, etc.) this means that tyres marked with the alpine symbol are mandatory.
On passenger cars and vans, all tyres on the vehicle must be marked with the alpine symbol.
On lorries and coaches, the requirement applies to steering and drive axles only. - Tyres marked with the alpine symbol are not required on trailers/caravans.
- It is allowed to fit tyres marked with the alpine symbol designed for at least 160 km/h (speed marking Q), even if the top speed of the vehicle exceeds 160 km/h.
A visible reminder label on the dashboard is not required.
- Studded tyres are not mandatory but are allowed from 1st of November until 15th of April. If fitted, all tyres on the vehicle combination must be studded.
Important note
According to Danish law, a winter tyre is always marked with "M+S" (Mud and Snow). However, there are also summer tyres that carry the same marking without being suitable for winter driving.
It is illegal to mix M+S marked tyres with non-M+S tyres on the same car (on lorries, mixing on the same axle is not allowed). This means that if summer tyres with the M+S marking are fitted, equivalent M+S-labelled summer tyres must be fitted when replacing them.
Mixing M+S marked summer tyres with M+S marked winter tyres is not recommended, even though it is actually legal!
